Method and provenance

You can check every number in a study

Every number links to its dataset, version, access date and file. A scientist with a PhD revises and signs every study.

01A traced number

Open any number and see where it comes from

In a study, each number opens a panel with the output it belongs to, the dataset and its version, the access date, the licence class, the SHA-256 fingerprint of the exact file, and the method.

Where a second source exists, the study compares them. ERA5 waves give a 99th percentile of 3.15 m against 3.01 m from WAVERYS, 4.7 % apart, over their common period (1980 to 2025).

02Three checks every study follows

Named source files

Each number records its dataset, version, access date and the SHA-256 fingerprint of the exact file.

Files checked on arrival

Every file is opened after download. Its fingerprint, variables, values and area are checked; its time range and depth levels are recorded.

Reviewed and signed

We analyse the data and write each study. A scientist with a PhD revises and signs every study.

03Sources

Public datasets, each named and versioned

These are the twelve datasets pulled for the Gulf of Mexico test box: eleven complete and one partial. Each study names every source it uses with its version and licence.

04How a study is made

From your coordinates to a signed study

  1. Send your site.Your point or area of interest, the project type and the study you need.
  2. Technical proposal. We send you a technical proposal, including a list of the data available for your site.
  3. Data downloaded and checked.Once the proposal is accepted and the contract signed, we download and quality-check all the data we will use, along with the related references, scientific papers and book chapters.
  4. Analysis and writing. We analyse all the data, create the results (graphs, figures, tables and images), and interpret and write up the findings.
  5. Revised and signed. The project manager, a scientist with a PhD, revises the study, makes corrections and signs it.
